            The year 2011 is coming to an end and we all look at the remaining days in our calendar with different feelings. We look at the goals that we have written out for the year and evaluate them with appreciation if we have met them to completion. If some of our goals have failed because of obstacles then it is a sign that we have to move on and learn from what we failed to do.
            Our community has its own process this year and we managed to go through the challenging situations. They are part of a changing and growing community. The coming of new immigrants and families are welcome opportunities to celebrate the reunions and new life for all of them. There are new faces and more members. They are potential leaders with great ideas and contributions.
            We have also lost some members in our community as most of them have moved to other provinces or have gone back home. Some have left us and joined our Divine Maker to a place of peace. One such leader is the late FAMAS president Albert Floresca. He will be missed and remembered for his outstanding contribution to our community.
            As the year ends Montreal Pinoy Post would like to thank all of you for your continuous support. We are here to serve you and give you the best in public service.
            We wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS 2012.

            The summer season is the best time to organize outdoor activities and a great opportunity to gather and bond with family and friends. It is also an ideal time to be a tourist in your own city. Visit team parks, museums, enjoy festivals and spend evenings watching fireworks. You can also enjoy an outdoor cafe with friends and watch people as they move up and down the city streets.
            In our community , it is the time of year when Famas ,one of the oldest organization is having it’s August election for new officers. The Filipino community has grown in numbers and new projects and opportunities have to be initiated for the community and its members. This is the time when we can stand together with one common goal: the well-being of our community and our unity. Let us support the leaders in their intention and purpose towards positive growth in our community. We have good leaders and they all have honorable intentions.
          We look forward to seeing you on August 14, 2011 at St. Kevin’s Church at 8:00 am for the Famas election.

MPP 2nd year anniversary

            Montreal Pinoy Post would like to express our deep feelings of concern for Japan‘s recent devastating earthquake and tsunami and the loss of many lives because of this unexpected tragedy. We offer prayers and support the movement to help the victims through donations to organizations around Montreal.
            I would also like to congratulate FAMAS for the great outcome of the recent amendment of the association’s constitution and by-laws. It was a sign that we acted as a community and made our presence felt through our participation. Now we can make things happen with the new changes and work in unity.
            The Montreal Pinoy Post Lakandula Awards is celebrated every other year. Next year we have scheduled a great celebration for our awardees.
            Lent is a season for reflection and we have to focus on gratitude for blessings we have in our lives. It is a time to take our life’s purpose in direction with deep faith in God and his hands of protection over all of us.
            I wish you all a beautiful spring season.

The Spirit Of Giving

Christmas is the time of year when we all define the word GIVING in significant ways. It is a fact that when the Yuletide season comes around we are all rushing to finish buying the items from our Christmas list. There are several of these lists: family, work, social circles, church and community organizations. It becomes a very hectic and stressful task. Most of the time it leaves us exhausted and broke.

The materialistic and consumerism of our day and age have made us all focus on the brand and price of popular items in the market and how they will make our children, family and friends very happy. What if our purchased gifts might not come up to the standards or the right objects of their desires, then it makes us the giver, very disappointed. That becomes a stressor and it can ignite conflict in the family when budget and long hours of shopping disrupt family schedule.

I would like to offer a few practical solutions to your Christmas preparation and gift giving rituals. These are simple ways of showing our generosity and be part of the spirit of giving on Christmas.

They are new ways of making new changes in our Christmas celebration in the area of gift giving.
1. Work within a practical budget.
2. Try giving a gift basket for families; it brings you to one gift for everyone.
3. Pool your money together to get an item for your parents.
4. The parents can do the same their children.
5. For community and other groups limit the cost between $ 5.00 to $ 10.00.
6. Potluck for Christmas parties.
7. Buy brand name items from sale and discounted prices
8. Do not impress and get distress after the day is over.
9. Keep your gifts simple and useful.
10. Enjoy the process of shopping with practical strategies.

I hope you all enjoy your Christmas Holidays and remember that the spirit of giving is all about the feelings of gratitude, bonding and the love we all give to one another.

After School Safety:

Parents are busy preparing for school and organizing the basic school needs of their children. This can be very stressful because lifestyle and changes in activities for family members has to be structured for the benefit of everyone.

The safety of our children at the end of the day and after school is a priority. We have to ensure their security at home. Proper instructions must be imparted to them. Food preparation has to be set for their convenience and well –being. The use of electrical appliances and other home devices must be well explained and understood.

Basic instructions on 911, phone numbers and addresses of family members, relatives, close friends must be accessible to your children.

These are simple reminders to our readers. It is a gesture of concern. The activity of life can bring us in all directions and we can overlook certain things. We make it a point in our paper to give special attention to what is important in the lives of the people in our community. We are here to serve you.

Publisher’s Note

The devastating earthquake that marked history last January 12, 2010 in Haiti disturbed the whole world into total shock. The lives of so many people changed in seconds and the city was nothing but ruins. We have to do our part as a member of humanity to give generously. We must contribute to saving lives and the rebuilding of Haiti, literally from the ground up. From this tragedy, we must count and re-count our blessings and be grateful for our own provisions, that the Haitians once had and now has lost.

My first blessing that I count with gratitude is that Montreal Pinoy Post has successfully reached a year in print and circulation. We are happy to see that our publication has contributed humbly to the community’s needs and interests.

The staff and I have decided that for our first anniversary we will be paying tribute to members of our Filipino community as well as other communities who have shared their skills, talents, ideas and time for the growth of our society. This special night of recognition will take place annually. We will celebrate the Montreal Pinoy Post and our award recipients on April 24, 2010.

Thank you very much for your patronage to our publication.

            As the year is coming to an end I can only count my blessings and feel so grateful for the support that I have received from all our advertisers, Filipino organizations and community, other communities, our local and Federal government, political leaders in the Philippines, Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, friends, my family and the Montreal Pinoy Post staff.
           We are here to support and address the needs of our community and for the betterment of our society and community. The recent typhoon calamity better known as Ondoy displaced the lives of many people in the Philippines and a global effort of assistance was initiated. We acted as a community here in Montreal and fundraisings were organized and help was given.
            It has been a good year when we look back at what we have accomplished and what we have done to extend our service to our community as a new publication. We have a more promising year and we can only do our best.

The devastating calamity last week in September in the Philippines with the lashing downpour of typhoon Ondoy brought about global concern and local involvement in our Filipino community. The spirit of community service moved from different directions from individuals to organizations and local government.

We would like to thank everyone for the benevolent gestures that was felt in our community when movement and action were taken. We are certain that assistance extended will reach those who need it most.

It is time for local election in the city and we are reminding everyone to exercise their right to vote. That right is necessary so we can fully get the attention and concern we all deserve to improve the quality of life we desire.

Our newspaper is here to serve everyone in equal opportunity and to deliver sound information.

This is the third issue of our newspaper and I am very grateful to all of our supporters, staff, volunteers and proofreaders.

Our publication is here to serve you in a position of neutrality and opportunity. You are all welcome to share your visions, missions, skills, potentials, events, business networking, organizational activities and your ideas within the pages of our journal.

We are non- partisan and non-political. We are here for one solid intention and that is to promote harmony and clarity in the information we print in our paper.

I would like to thank all the candidates of FAMAS in giving us their time and effort in granting the interviews to our staff. It is a service we extend to all of you. It gives our readers the chance to know you, your intentions and your platform.

We are saddened by the demise of former president Corazon C. Aquino last August 1, 2009. We will remember her as the symbol of women empowerment and peaceful People Power Revolution.

In her loving memory we encourage all Filipinos to wear a yellow ribbon for 10 days as a gesture of sympathy and bereavement.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the successful launching of Montreal Pinoy Post last April. Thank ou all for your support. I prepared for a gathering for the newspaper’s presentation for a small group of people. To my surprise, two hundred people assembled in a gesture of encouragement and community spirit.

The newspaper’s objective is to serve this multicultural community, motivate an interest to know each other, collaborate with one another toward a common goal of friendship in the community. We have sections available open for other cultural groups. We welcome their contributions.

The growth of a newspaper as a process is augmenting as we learn from each publication. Everyone is important in this project. I am blessed to have a great working staff to share my ideas and enthusiasm to produce its content.

I thank all our local politicians here and the government officials in the Philippines. To all different organizations, religious groups, families, advertisers, supporters, entrepreneurs and especially all the volunteers for their support

No winter lasts forever. Spring has arrived indeed, and we look forward to a new beginning.

It took me quite some years of contemplation until finally I had the courage to achieve what seems to be just dormant in the bed of my inspirations. Along with the onset of spring, timing seems perfect. And so, in dedication to the Filipino community of Montreal and Suburbs and with the help of our wonderful staff and some kind and generous members of our community who have supported my desires in many ways, and for which I will always be grateful, here, le voila, my long time dream, The Montreal Pinoy Post is born! My sincere thanks to all of you.

I decided to embark in trhis independent community newspaper project because I felt it was the right time to fill in the need for new opportunities, ideas and interest in our readership today.

The objective of this newspaper is to inform, educate, entertain our readers in a variety of categories within the pages. My staff shares the same vision and they are individuals with talents and expertise antwined with genuine community spirit. We wish that this paper is a good medium for both the young and the not so young in our community.

It is also my vision to go with the flow of the fast changing times and the era of the information age. In the world of internet communications everything is accessible, in just a click you are globally with everyone. But I believe that not everyone is computer savvy so print media will alwyas be a mainstay. It is my goal to blend with what is out on the internet highway and give it importance in print.

This newspaper is open to contributors from multicultural communities in Montreal, Canada, USA, Philippines, Europe and Asia.

I hope you enjoy this humble contribution.
